nematode Growing Christmas Trees Forest

hare UNOS 500 years in Riga - Latvia will decorate the first Christmas tree. Since then the tradition has been covering the world and now hundreds of millions of trees decorate homes and streets in nearly every corner of the planet.

cultivation and production of Christmas trees is an important source of income in rural areas in temperate zones. In Spain sold 2 million units per year, mostly species nordmanniana Abies and Picea excelsa . The main production areas are Catalonia, Navarra and the Basque Country.

In the U.S. there are approximately 350 million Christmas trees grown on some 15,000 farms cover about 140,000 hectares. Each year between 25 and 30 million trees are sold in the U.S. employing over 100,000 people.

The state of Oregon in the north is where the crop is more important, occupying about 67,000 hectares and accounts for over U.S. $ 100 million in sales. 97% of the cultivated trees belong to two species: Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii ) and the Noble Fir (Abies procera ). Other cultivated species are Abies balsamifera, Abies fraseri, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus virginiana and Pinus strobus . Moreover, in recent times, research is underway for the introduction of other fir species, mainly from the area of \u200b\u200bAnatolia and the Caucasus (Turkey) as Abies nordmanniana subsp. nordmanniana or Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-Trojani.
see some production areas in Oregon Christmas trees in Google Maps

After holiday trees are harvested and replanted in the gardens of the houses while the rest is collected by one of 4,000 collection programs existing in the country. The trees collected for composting besides, are also widely used in the creation and restoration of habitats for fish in lakes and rivers, in the recovery of dunes and coastal areas and even as a cover for parks, playgrounds and gardens.

The need to market and distribute 25-30 million Christmas trees at least three weeks, equivalent to the sale and delivery of 1 to 1.5 million trees a day, nearly 1,000 daily average per farm. ; This concentration of work made since the 1980's larger farms began using helicopters to harvest, transport meeting and even trees. Helicopters decrease the amount of time between harvesting and marketing, reducing it to two weeks to just three days.

To call public attention on the growing utilzacion of synthetic trees, mainly manufactured in China, American Association growers Christmas tree has developed an online game called " Attack of the Mutant Artificial Trees"

The nematode of pine wood (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus)

The nematode of pine wood (OWN) Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is causing the condition commonly known as "Pine Wilt Disease."

This nematode is transmitted from one tree to another by insects of the genus Monochamus ( Coleoptera: Cerambicidae ). It is also possible to transmit over long distances in transportation of timber in the presence of the nematode.

The B. xylophilus has two different ways to make your cycle, a phase called propagative or micófaga and other phytophagous or dispersion phase. These phases are mainly in the type of transmission, either by oviposition propagative phase, or supply for the dispersion. In both cases transmission of nematodes from one tree to another is carried by insects of the genus Cerambycidae Monochamus spp. In our geographic area the species responsible for this transmission is Monochamus galloprovincialis.

The Monochamus spp have one generation per year although in some cases may require two years to complete its entire life cycle. Adults emerge from late May to late August. These are directed to the branches with new buds where they feed for 10 to 15 days to get sexual maturity. If Monochamus is infected with nematode This complements the propagative phase or phytophagous.
Once sexually mature are attracted to weakened trees or freshly cut wood, for oviposition. Females with their jaws dig conical holes where they lay an egg. In the adult usually live an average of 83 days during which get between 40 and 215 eggs. If the insect had been infected with these nematodes penetrate the wood to feed on the fungi of the same (or micófaga propagative phase).

The Monochamus hibernation, usually takes the form of larvae inside the wood. In May it pupation place in a chamber inside the timber, after which the adults emerge to complete their life cycle. Shortly before emergence, the pupa infected nematodes to spread to adults.

Early symptoms displayed in pines affected by the nematode, is a amarilleamento and subsequent dry needles, branches mainly in the upper third subsequently spreading to the entire tree . In a relatively short (1 to 3 months) cup yellow needles has a provision similar to a straight plume, showing a significant loss of follaxe; until finally the tree dies.

sintomatoloxía
This is caused by colonization of resin canals per B. xylophilus where it feeds on the epithelial cells lining and the surrounding parenchyma. The destruction of the host tree resin canals quickly prevents the flow of resin, this can be checked by artificial wounds on branches and trunks. This is followed by a drop of perspiration on the needles, causing dry and color loss in the affected trees. Rapid increases in population of nematodes Once stopped the flow of resin, cause the death of sick pines.

On Monochamus spp., We highlight the damage done during the larval feeding galleries in the sapwood causing well as holes in the wood, which the economically depreciated. Oviposition takes place only in newly felled trees or those under stress conditions. The symptoms described are not unique to B. xylophilus and the other may be due to pathological problems or the different physiological changes, so you should always perform the corresponding analysis official laboratories.

This nematode is native to North America (Canada, USA, Mexico). In the early twentieth century appeared in Japan, causing serious losses still continue to represent the order of one million m3 of timber per year. This condition also reached other Asian countries like China, Taiwan and Korea also causing significant damage.

For this danger the Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is considered a quarantine organism in the European Union as envisaged 77/93/CENE Directive on protective measures against the introduction into the Community of organisms harmful to plants or plant products and against their spread.

Portuguese parishes that have detected the presence of nematodes (1999 - 2010)
In 1999, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus was first detected in Europe specifically in Setúbal (Portugal).

Since the detection of nematode of pine wood, Portugal has implemented an eradication program in demarcated areas of the country. However, in 2008 the appearance of infected pine trees outside of these areas made the Union Recrudiera European demands as control. In addition, intensified the obligation of member states, and especially by proximity in the case of Spain, to carry out actions to prevent the entry of the nematode in its borders, and developed very strict measures to control the timber trade. Portugal was considered a quarantine area and for export, the wood of susceptible species should be accompanied by a plant passport and in the case of derivatives of the same must comply with International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures ISPM-15 .

since the implementation of control measures in Spain were found positive in Sierra Pine God the Father in Extremadura (Fall 2008) and a few days ago another specimen from As Neves and Salvaterra de Miño in Galicia, near the Portuguese border. Fight

: Usually

measures for the control and eradication of the nematode includes the following sizes:
  • inspections and sampling of a network of points and directions in forest stands of susceptible species with intensity variable sampling by risk. In this sampling, special attention is given to masses in decay, in bodies affected by forest fires in the vicinity of roads and sensitive material in the environment of processing facilities
  • timber inspection and sample collection in facilities for primary processing industries of wood
  • establishment of areas in which they have verified the absence of the organism.
  • Demarcation of forest areas which has revealed the presence of the organism (known as demarcated areas). These include the focus, which will destroy all infected plant material and sensitive, and partly to act as a security or buffer zone, an overall width not less than 20 miles.
in Japan in 1975 he began a breeding program for selection of resistant varieties. To date 204 identifier will be clones of Pinus densiflora and 90 clones of Pinus thunbergii

Time Out Buenos Aires

Relations between forestry, forest planning and technical forestry (forestry).

to scrub holly mass of Scots pine
A Fonsagrada (Lugo)

The principle of multiple use Multifunctionality or derived from any forest or woodland can simultaneously provide various goods or services to the property and by extension to the Company, so that the forester must administer that address all aspects of production.

The basis for this determination was twofold: the improvement and conservation of forests is based on its assessment by different social groups, which receive benefits, the tensions between different interest groups are a constant source of instability and should be reduced by applying this principle.

However, there may be incompatibility in the simultaneous production of two products, for example the claim of hunting in a mountain raid on the same day that is domestic livestock grazing. Therefore, keeping as much as possible the diversity of production must be made by the Company, the owner's consent and advice of the forester, an order of preference in this production.

production that is preferred in each hill is to serve schedules and treatments. Once formulated the preferential production must be maintained long enough to meet the objectives of forest management and function, since it admits no abrupt changes in these transcendent determinations. The other utilities, also nested with each other, organizing it comes to meeting space in relation to time.

logical process forester performance will depend on the combination of science, planning and technical:
- first carried out a study and analysis of the status of the body, its functioning and its possible evolution, ie it acquires precise knowledge, and concludes with a diagnosis of the situation and trends;
- after analyzing the claims of property, society and the possibilities of satisfying them, suggesting the preferential production and subordinates;
- concludes with a proposed treatment, bearing in mind that implementation, since it is not an exact science and that can cause variations in the two points discussed above, must be flexible regarding quantifications scheduled.

Dia Normal or diameter at breast height

The most common variable used in the most important measurement of trees (Dendrometry) and forests (Dasometry) is the tree diameter .

Source: Forest Mensuration : Measuring trees, stands and forests for ...
Although what we usually want to know, not the diameter, but the cross-sectional area to estimate the volume or basal area is the diameter or, failing that, the circumference of the parameters that are easier to measure.

To allow comparison of the measures taken on different trees or on the same tree at different times, must define a reference point on the trunk . It is important that this point is situated at a convenient height near the ground to allow easy location for measurement by different operators or in different times.

The universal convention is to measure the diameter, with bark unless otherwise specified, at a fixed height from ground level . This standard height breast height is . This location varies slightly between countries:
  • In continental Europe, Australia, UK, Canada and others are considering breast height defined as 1.30 m in height from the ground .
  • In New Zealand, India, Malaysia, South Africa and some other countries breast height is considered as 1.40 m from the ground.
  • In the United States used 4.5 ft (1.3716 m)
  • and Japan (1.25 m).
These heights are relatively comfortable and accessible for measurement caliper They are also, in most cases, sufficiently far from the influence of the broadening that occurs at the base of the tree. Although probably a greater height would be preferable for the latter reason and bother hinder the process of data collection.

in the literature can be represented by their initials DAP or called normal diameter (d n ) . In the literature written in English is usually called DBH Diameter at Breast Height.
Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor ) in Pemberton, Australia.
81m in height and diameter of 1.98 m.
Author: Dennis Haugen, Bugwood.org

The "breast height" is a long tradition and convention used in forestry practice. However used in very specific cases other reference heights.

Researchers in silvopastoral and agroforestry systems use 0.3 or 0.7 m height above the ground as reference, because it has a strong correlation with estimates of powers between grass - crop - trees

Other researchers have found that for the purposes of calculating the volume of a tree is better to use relative heights rather than absolute height. That is, for example, calculate the diameters to 5% of the total height, giving a height measurement of different diameter for each tree.

Legislation Fire and castles in the air

Every year in early summer Galicia been marked by all sorts of events regarding the application of Fire Act 3 / 2007, "as preventive / enforcement" promulgated by it, the private and public responsibilities for compliance aggravated, if possible, by the context of budgetary constraints of the various administrations. Examples
Press ( 1 , 2, 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ...)

then extract the text of the article "Forest fire and management territory "where it takes, in my view, an interesting approach from the point of view of the proliferation of standards difficult to enforce, practical application and little dubious technical content:

---
(...) Very little has been innovative in terms of prevention policies. The creation of 'danger zones' and the establishment of a strict regime of prohibitions and affirmative obligations to, and generally included in the Forest Fire Act of 1968 and demonstrated little effect in practice. It is impractical to attempt to maintain the forest as a garden.

Moreover, the legislative onslaught endured as a result of the futile attempt to solve all problems by decree, creates considerable legal uncertainty, and makes root the idea that laws are to be met. ..
(...)
Says Professor García de Enterría in a short and interesting book entitled " Justice and legal certainty in a world of runaway laws" that the old civil code principle that ignorance of the laws no excuse for their fulfillment, is presented as a mockery even to lawyers. Indeed, he continues, is impossible to know the relentless tide of laws and regulations whose complex meshes have yet to live.

legislates coup is happening and therefore without sufficient reflection. Thus, after the stunning and dramatic forest fire in Guadalajara on 16 July 2005 approved a Royal Decree-Law 11/2005 22 July (after 6 days of the event!). This Royal Decree-Law, called for urgent action on forest fires, which stipulates that measures will be in effect only until 1 November of that year, provided such severe and widespread bans, which then had to be reinterpreted in autonomous communities.

The following year the case in Galicia. Following the wave of fires in the summers of 2005 and 2006, adopted the Law 3 / 2007 of 9 April prevention and protection against forest fires in Galicia, to give legal cover to the drastic limitations on private property had already imposed Decree autonomic 105/2006, dated 22 June of measures to prevent forest fires, protection of settlements in rural and regulation of harvesting and reforestation, and due to lack of sufficient statutory effect to limit private property , had won the unfavorable opinion of Advisory Consello Galicia.

(...) The so-called in vulgar terms, elimination of "weeds" as stringently to end the fire by removing the fuel, is targeted at the current state land law ( Royal Decree 2 / 2008, of June 20, by approving the revised Land Law):
" in soil that is rural for the purposes of this Act or building is vacant, the duty to preserve is to maintain the land and plant cover in a position to avoid the risk of erosion, fire, flood, safety or health public or damage to third parties or the public interest, including the environment, prevent pollution of soil, water or air pollution nuisance and unfair on other goods and, where appropriate, retrieve them, and keep the establishment and services operating from the uses and activities taking place on the ground "
or the law of zoning and environmental protection rural Galicia, which requires the landowner to preserve them and keep them in their natural state, and the plant under specific conditions to avoid erosion and fires ... which continues to be a general obligation for an indefinite.

is with the approval of the legislation of forest fires in Galicia and its development where it has reached the ultimate consequences in the imposition of obligations on the owners, who in some cases as we see could pose an expropriation of rights without compensation, but above all to assume a very expensive obligations to homeowners if they can be identified, or they can identify their farms, which in practice will necessitate the implementation by management subsidiary, which makes the measure even more utopian.

The Act of the Parliament of Galicia ( Law 3 / 2007, dated April 9 ) imposes an obligation to manage the plant biomass of certain strips of land, in which either may be retained certain bushes and trees. The criteria for the management of that biomass were approved by Order of the Ministry for Rural Affairs on July 31, 2007 published in the Official Gazette of Galicia August 7, 2007 general criteria which are reproduced:
Article 2 Criteria .- general. In areas where it is mandatory in the management of biomass in accordance with the provisions of Law 3 / 2007, dated April 9, prevention and protection against forest fires in Galicia, to which Article 1 of this order, shall be met cumulatively the following criteria:

1. In the tree layer, the masses will be mixed or broadleaf deciduous and plant spacing is a minimum of 7 feet and keeping the glasses tangents. Pruning should be 35% of the height of the tree until it reaches 11.4 meters, height from which pruning should reach at least 4 meters above the ground throwing.

2. In the shrub and herbaceous, the load can not exceed total of 2,000 m3/hectare, must simultaneously be met the following conditions:

a) must be guaranteed the fuel horizontal discontinuity between the infrastructure and the outer boundary of the strip biomass management.

b) The maximum height of vegetation, shrubs and herbaceous, is contained in the table, varying according to the percentage of ground cover.
  • % tree covered land, less than 20. Maximum vegetation height (cm): 100.
  • % tree covered land: 20 to 50. Maximum Height of vegetation (cm): 40.
  • % of land covered tree: over 50. Maximum vegetation height (cm): 20. Forcing
planting of certain tree species and capricious distances between each of them, to prohibit the planting of others, especially pretending to be kept private farms with a maximum height of shrub and herb 20 cm, in the Standing in an area like Galicia where ferns due to weather or bushes should be cut two or three times a year, is a very strong limitation on property rights, undue economic burdens and impossible to tackle by many small landowners, a legal requirement that owners should not rush or unknown owners, must be assumed by the administration of public funds, and possible expropriation (lost profit by cutting trees) without compensation, which could be unconstitutional.

But mostly there is a fundamental error in the approach: the forest or forest plantations that are populated burning of certain species, or because they have much bush (so useful for wildlife), but because burning While there are those who recklessly or intentionally plant will fire. This measure, like others that we will then seek to resolve the problem by paying for the sins. (...)
